A cochlear implant, a small electronic device, may be an option when hearing aids don't provide the sound clarity needed to understand speech and spoken language. Early intervention is crucial. The chance of improvement decreases over time as the hearing loss worsens. This is especially true for children: the earlier an implant is placed, the more benefits an implant can have.
