An audiometry test can be used to see if a person is a good candidate for cochlear implant surgery. Audiometry is a painless and non-invasive method of determining a person's hearing sensitivity. The hearing test involves playing sounds of a single frequency at various intensities and determining the lowest loudness level that the person can hear in each frequency. An earphone sends a single frequency tone, known as pure tone, into the ear canal. The testing covers the entire frequency range of human hearing. Externally presented sounds pass through the ear canal, middle ear, inner ear, and auditory nerve before being processed in the brain.
